Blog #23 Creating/ Designing a Title Card

Image
Now that I have chosen my film's title: Flawless, the next step is to design a proper title card, which I will use on posters and in the film itself. A title card allows font and other unique design choices to apply to the title of the film, which will greatly aid my film in particular because as I previously mentioned; Flawless does not instantly communicate horror or gore; major factors and themes in my film. Therefore my goal in designing a title card will to be to fully convey my film's tone into it, to the fullest extent possible. I will be using Canva to design my title card.  Above is the title card I was able to create. I chose a gothic font, as gothic aesthetics are commonly associated with horror and love, hinting at some of the main themes in my film. Expanding on the horror theme, I chose to have the text red akin to that of blood promising gore in the film, while still hinting at the romance elements of the film as red is associated with roses as well. The most u...

Blog #22 Creating a Title

Image
One of the most important parts of a film is its title. A movies title is what attracts the audience to it, and is a strong word or phrase which encapsulates the picture's themes and story.  For example an iconic horror film franchise title is Scream. The title is simple and effective, instantly communicating to the audience that the film is horror, while communicating an energetic tone from the mental image of a scream, allowing the audience to expect kills, intense chase scenes, and fights. I plan to create a unique title which, similar to Scream's will only be one word.  After much consideration I have chosen Flawless as my short film's title. I have chosen Flawless as it reflects the themes of my film quite well; communicating the romantic tones in my film and it also implies perfection something the main character Dillon seeks in his self image. One detail I really like about the title is that it doesn't instantly imply horror, not without some context, this hint ...

Blog Post #21 Expanding Themes

Image
looking into my basic story and themes of toxic relationships, I can add depth to my film and expand on its metaphors to create a stronger message and lasting effect on my viewers.  I will use the cult and all of Dillon's relationships in my film as metaphors for relationships themselves and how we view ourselves, how others view us, and how we may change ourselves for others. I want to focus on self esteem and self image, with the main character being an anxious teenager trying to fit in as a perfect role for this theme.  In my early story draft a reveal is that Dillon's new girlfriend Anna, is a cult member herself, contributing to Dillon's death, I would like to expand on this reveal. I now plan to include multiple characters in my film whom ether Dillon compares himself to, or judge Dillon, and they will also be revealed as the rest of the cult members who are killing Dillon. What this messaging means: Dillon finds himself constantly overthinking other's thoughts a...

Blog Post #20 First Instagram Post

Image
above is my first Instagram post on the Split Spine account. I used my first post as a way to introduce people to my production company, and give them a-little information on its background and what type of films it will produce. I have used my background in the media studies class, with my previous assignments, being horror shorts(one being an opening scene), and using my background to build credibility for myself as a director and the founder of Split Spine, further persuading my audience to engage and follow what Split Spine produces. I also used hashtags to have a more targeted audience, recommending my account to people following horror on instagram, so that more people possibly interested in my short film, will see it on their instagram page.

Blog Post #19 Planning Filming Locations

Image
I need to plan where I will shoot my film, so that I can get a more accurate vision for the story and shot composition. It is important to know where I will be shooting scenes, so that I can give the actors notices in advance so that they have the addresses and can plan when they're schedules are open for filming.  Filming location 1: Dillion's Bedroom The majority of the first and second act of my short film will take place at Dillon's house (predominantly in his bedroom). This will be where Dillon waits for Anna to come over, leading up to the break in scene. Filming location 2: Dillon's Backyard This is where the 3rd act will take place, where Dillon fights with a cult member, and the many cult members are revealed, Anna being one of them, leading up to Dillon's death scene. I will now notify the lead actors Gavin Jordan and Lauren Davis where the locations are, so that filming dates can be discussed and made in advance, taking in the possible need of reshoots i...

Blog Post #18 Creating an Instagram Account

Image
It will be necessary for my film's marketing campaign that I create an Instagram account. I will post teasers, posters, and announcements for my film on this account, throughout the production and post production of my short film. I will be creating the account for my production company Split Spine.  I created this instagram under my production company rather than my film, as as of right now I do not have a final title for my film, therefor I cannot properly market the film with a title, without false advertising a non final working title. This could potentially hinder my film's reception as I would build hype for a film which(at least with the title) will never be made. I kept the account professional, only following cast members, and myself the director, also enabling the viewers to look into the actors of my film. I also linked the youtube channel in which I will post trailers for my film, along with the final cut.

Blog Post #17 Casting Anna

Image
After casting Gavin Jordan as Dillon, I now need to cast the major supporting role of Anna; the false love interest of Dillon, whom will need to have chemistry with Gavin in order to sell their relationship to the audience properly. So where better to look than Gavin's girlfriend Lauren Davis, whom has previous acting experience.  Lauren is the perfect choice for Anna as Gavin and her will have a believable connection on screen, selling their relationship enough to the audience, while still being able to act out awkward or tense moments, hinting at Anna's malicious truth, acting as almost a false hero in the film.
