Blog Post #21 Expanding Themes

looking into my basic story and themes of toxic relationships, I can add depth to my film and expand on its metaphors to create a stronger message and lasting effect on my viewers.

A Nightmare on Elm Street oral history: Wes Craven, Rob Zombie, Robert Englund, and more discuss the iconic horror film.

I will use the cult and all of Dillon's relationships in my film as metaphors for relationships themselves and how we view ourselves, how others view us, and how we may change ourselves for others. I want to focus on self esteem and self image, with the main character being an anxious teenager trying to fit in as a perfect role for this theme.

In my early story draft a reveal is that Dillon's new girlfriend Anna, is a cult member herself, contributing to Dillon's death, I would like to expand on this reveal. I now plan to include multiple characters in my film whom ether Dillon compares himself to, or judge Dillon, and they will also be revealed as the rest of the cult members who are killing Dillon.

What this messaging means: Dillon finds himself constantly overthinking other's thoughts and opinions, and constantly comparing himself with others, editing himself along the way, trying to fit in and be 'cooler' and likable, however as Dillon edits himself, he loses who he is, symbolized through his death in my film.
