Blog #42 Setting up Final Practical Effects Rigs
It is Feburary 21st, Day 2 of filming, but before the cast arrives, like Day 1 (see blog #36) I have to prepare the practical effects, this time to be used. I already set up my skull and extra jello, so today Ill have to focus on the stabbing effect; I have to set up the rig for it and create the blood required for it, and any other effects in the film.
Here is the plan I made for the stabbing rig, I will be following it to set up the actual rig today.
I gathered a metal foldable chair (easiest to clean up the cornstarch blood mix off of), an old black shirt, a foam hollow structure (to hold the blood bag in so that, when stabbed the blood will pour out), and some card board boxes.
Here is the final rig for the effect.
I will store the rig in my garage until it is time to film it. But before filming is ready I still have to make my blood.
The blood is a super easy, and super effective effect, Billy Loomis said it best "corn syrup, same stuff they used for pigs blood in Carrie.". The trick has been used in movies for years, and still is today, due to how realistic it is; corn syrup matches the density of blood almost perfectly, and with the right mix of colors, it looks just like it too. In my first picture of the mix the red is very clear and light, and after simply adding some blue and more red, it turns into a perfect deep cut/wound blood color.
Now that all my practical effects are ready for filming, I am now fully prepared for filming.
