Blog #37 Setting Up Skull Practical Effects Rig & Testing

Its Friday the 20th, day one of filming, but before the cast gets here I can finally prepare the practical effect of the skull for tomorrow when it will be used. I got 2 fake skulls however I will only be setting one up for the rig, and the other will just be a test to see how well they smash. My plan is to poke a hole into the back of a skull, and fill the inside with jello, and cover the outside with jello also so that when its smashed it will realistically move and react like flesh. I will also be making a separate bowl of jello incase I need to add more onto the skull or need it for any effects at any point.

Here is the bowl of extra jello

Here is the skull filled with Jello with jello covering it

To make the skull I had to cut a hole in the back of it, and pour the liquid jello into a bag making sure the jello gets inside the skull, to get the jello to fully cover the skull I had to tie the bag really tight around it, which to my benefit is a more accurate amount of flesh around the bone so the effect should come out great. Now I can leave the skull and the regular jello in the fridge until tomorrow, when it will be used for the scene when the cult members smash open Dillon's skull with a hammer.

Here are the results of the test, as you can see it smashed great, I see it as a major success, and since jello will hold no pressure against it, it should look even better with the actual skull.
