Blog #28 Planning Practical Effects (Dillon Stabbed Effect)

Now that I have finished my script I can now plan the practical effects of my film. Theres acouple things I can note down this time before planning; this film is quite different then my project last year (The Second Reign) in-which I filmed a straight up slasher, my film this year (Flawless) has deeper meanings and is a metaphor for losing yourself in comparison to others or changing yourself to a way you believe fits in to the point you lose who you truly are. So, to fit my themes and messaging Flawless will end up being much less gorey then The Second Reign, Flawless moreso focusing on building suspense, and being able to have that payoff through practical work. In my script there are 2 gore set pieces; Dillon is stabbed, and then Dillons head is smashed open; I will now draw a concept of how I plan on creating the effect where Dillon is stabbed.

I plan on having a blood( Corn syrup mixed with red food coloring, blue food coloring and water to lower the thickness) bag attached to a chair with a shirt over it, and having a hand double (most likely myself) stab the blood bag while I record it on a tripod. This effect is alot more realistic then my overexaggerated kills in The Second Reign so that it feels more realistic, and keeps a consistent tone throughout the film, so that I can continue building suspense without breaking tension.

Now that I have the effect planned I can get the materials I need and begin to test the effectiveness of it.
