Blog #39 Filming Day 1 - Scene 1, Shots 2-7

Scene 1, shots 2-7, is literally just the entirety of scene one, which is quite an easy scene, making it perfect for day 1. All I have to film is Dillon waking up, and working out. Before filming the wake up scene I had to prep my room a bit, as we were filming while the sun was still out, which in context of the film, it should not be up yet as Dillon is waking up very early to work out before he goes to school. So I had to turn off all the lights in my room and shut all the windows and curtains to create the effect of it being early morning. One other 'bump' we ran into was the time, it was 7:00pm, and its supposed to be early in the ams, this problem actually had an very easy solution.. it didnt have one, since Gavin's phone didn't read am or pm, I just decided to role with it, and say Dillon's school starts at 9:00 or 10:00am; a realistic starting time although later than ours.

Close up of Dillon shutting off his phone's alarm.

After closing all the curtains and turning off all the lights in my room, it became too dark, so to add "morning blue" lighting I actually just turned on my tv in the corner of the room, and set it on the Roku city home screen; a simple but effective trick.

Long shot of Dillon bench pressing.

For this shot and a majority of the weightlifting scenes, I had Robert body double Gavin as Dillon, putting on glasses and covering his facial features with a matching hoodie. This was for the safety of Gavin, as Gavin does not weightlift, and Robert is an avid weightlifter on the weightlifting team, which for him 225lbs(amount on the bar) is a very controlled weight as his max is around 315lbs on bench press.

Over the Shoulder shot of Dillon looking at instagram stories.

For this shot I simply had Gavin look at stories posted by myself and Robert - I originally planned to include myself in my film as a 4th cultmember (including Anna) who would do pretty much nothing but show up until the finale, however I decided to cut this idea as a majority of my shots had movement, requiring me to shoot them myself. I still included my instagram story as me and Robert were the only people who weightlifted, and it represented the themes of Dillon doubting and judging himself, even though he is strong, he still compares his body to others.

I am very happy with all these shots, and I already plan on using the weightlifting shots as an opening montage with the Diegetic music from Dillon's headphones.
