Blog #34 Planning Character Wardrobes

 A characters outfit in a film is incredibly important. Not only is it the audiences first impression of the character without seeing them do anything yet, it also conveys underlying information about the character, and how they feel; the wardrobe can be a character itself if used effectively, and I plan to utilize it to my fullest possible potential. 

Before I start to draw what I want the wardrobes to look like I have to remind myself of the themes of my; fitting in, self acceptance and image and toxic relationships. And in the film Dillon starts out over analyzing himself and comparing himself with others, until he meets Anna whom he edits himself even more for, leading up to the cult's overpowering of Dillon and his murder (symbolic for him losing himself and his self image by how much he edits himself to fit in).

Now that i have reassed what my film means, I am ready to plan the wardrobes for Dillon, Anna, and the cultmembers.

Here is the wardrobe I came up with for my characters.

Going over the wardrobe it is almost better if I explain it backwards, so starting with Dillon's third outfit (labeled 3) which is a black t shirt and black pants. This outfit is not only Dillons final outfit, but the cultmember's and Anna's outfit throughout the whole film. This is specifically Dillon's outfit after he starts dating Anna, symbolizing that he has fully conformed to the crowd and the cult, and is no longer trying to be himself, but trying to be a person whom he believes will be liked and accepted by others.

Going over Dillon's first outfit (labeled 1), the outfit is a black hoodie and black pants. In the wardrobe i decided to have a hoodie symbolize Dillon's personality, so this outfit communicates while Dillon is still his true self, he feels like he fits in while he is weightlifting (symbolized through the same color pallette as Anna and the cultmembers).

And finally going over Dillons second outfit (labeled 2), the outfit is a white (strongly contrasting black) hoodie and bright pants. This symbolizes Dillon's true self, unedited before meeting Anna.  

Now that I have decided the wardrobes, I can now inform my actors on what to wear when filming.

SUBURBAN HOME - DILLONS BEDROOM - MORNING                        1 An alarm buzzes as DILLON wakes up to turn it off, and begins his morning routine; DILLON works out in his home gym, then opens instagram and looks at people's stories.
