Blog #29 Planning Practical Effects (Dillon's Head Smashed)
Now that i have planned the effect for Dillon getting stabbed, I now can plan the next effect; his head getting smashed. I want this effect to be a stand out in my film, not just for being gorey but for how I want to use some of my messaging and metaphors to punctuate it, and purposefully make it feel a-little exaggerated or that it doesn't fully fit in with the rest of the film, in a similar way to the third act of Coralie Fargeat's The Substance. I want to hit all these themes in this effect as it symbolizes Dillon losing himself in the standards and opinions of himself and others. Now that I know my goals for this effect and its impact in my film I will plan out how I will pull it off.
I will be filling and covering a skull in Jello and fake blood, which when smashed will create realistic gore effects of blood and flesh. I also wanted to avoid using a fake head similar to my film last year, as I found the goofy campiness of that kind of effect wouldn't work as well in this film, so I plan on ether having a cut back to the skull being smashed, or using some editing to have a close up of Dillons face cut to the effect in a seamless manner. I believe unlike the effect of Dillon being stabbed, this effect fits fairly in line with my previous film (which was a slasher) so I am quite happy with the plan, and I believe the effect will convey the correct message and response to audiences.
