Blog #27 Short Film vs Feature Film
Now that I have completed my script, I can analyze my film's story.
At first glance the difference between a short film and a feature film is simply the runtime, a short film is a maximum of about 45 minutes, a movie is usually a minimum of 90 minutes, simple.. not exactly, getting caught up in this simple differentiation, and not looking into what truly makes each medium authentic, is an ignorance which can greatly weaken a director's final product.
Feature films tell profound, complex and multi-layered storylines with multiple unique and deep character arcs, utilizing their full runtime.
Short films focus on a single concept (an event or specific character moment), and are traditionally more experimental. They have a shorter runtime, so the runtime is entirely focused on one major event which the story revolves around, lacking any side plots, or character arcs (unless the main focus of it is a single character's arc).
How my film meets the short film criteria, my film revolves solely around Dillon's arc of shielding away his personality, and giving in to his body dysmorphia and social pressures. It is more experimental in how metaphorical that arc is portrayed; through a cult luring him into their trap; but the experimental nature of my film still stays true to short films as none of the cult-members or even Anna are fleshed out or given remote character arcs.
