Blog Post #16 Counter Stereotypes Final Girl
Scream (1996)
One of the most common stereotypes in horror media is the Final Girl character. Specifically the most common in slasher films, for example Sidney Prescott from the Scream films. Typically the last remaining female character in the slasher will manage to outsmart or out-whit the typically male villain in the final confrontation of the film. However my short film, switches this trope, having a male protagonist fall victim to a female villain. This creates a counter stereotype for patriarchy, putting a woman in a dominant villainous role against a man, while creating a new and interesting story for the horror genre, diversifying it from other previously released films. It is important to use counter stereotypes to create a new sense of interest, keeping the genre in the public interest and engaging with audiences in new and exciting ways.
